Our story

About PDFBison

We build file tools that never see your files. Here is why that matters, and how we made it work.

0 bytes uploaded · processing happens on your device

The problem we kept running into

Almost every online file tool works the same way. You upload your document to a company’s server, their computer does the work, and you download the result. It is convenient, it is normal, and almost nobody stops to think about what it actually means.

It means your salary slip sat on a stranger’s hard drive. Your signed contract, your child’s birth certificate, your bank statement, your passport scan, the medical report you were compressing for an insurance claim — all of it travelled across the internet to a machine you do not control, run by a company whose retention policy you did not read, in a country whose data laws you have never looked up.

Most of these companies are perfectly honest. They delete files after an hour, they encrypt in transit, they mean well. But the safest place for your private documents is the place they already are: your own device. Every upload is a risk taken for no reason other than technical convenience — the tool builder’s convenience, not yours.

What changed

For most of the internet’s history, uploading was genuinely necessary. Browsers could not do heavy work; servers had to. That stopped being true several years ago. Modern browsers can decode a PDF, re-render every page, compress images, and rebuild a document — quickly, on a phone, without contacting anyone.

The technology arrived, but the habit stayed. Tools kept uploading because that is how tools had always been built. PDFBison is what happens when you rebuild them the other way.

Every tool on this site runs entirely inside your browser. Your file is opened by your own device, processed by your own processor, and saved back to your own storage. There is no upload step, no queue, no temporary copy on a server somewhere. There is no server that could hold your file even if we wanted it to — which we do not.

How to verify we are telling the truth

Privacy claims are easy to make. Ours can be checked in under a minute, and we would rather you did than take our word for it:

  • Load any tool page, then disconnect from the internet. Turn off Wi-Fi, switch on airplane mode. Now use the tool. It still works — compression, merging, conversion, all of it. Software that needs to upload your file cannot function without a network. Ours does not need one.
  • Open your browser’s developer tools (F12), switch to the Network tab, and process a file. You will see the page and its libraries load. You will not see your document go anywhere, because it never does.
  • Watch the counter. Every tool page carries a live badge showing bytes uploaded — permanently zero — alongside how much data your own device has processed.

What we are actually trying to fix

Privacy is the foundation, but it is not the whole reason this site exists. There is a second, quieter problem we care about just as much.

Tools that fight the person using them

The free file tool market is full of small hostilities: three files per day then a paywall, a watermark stamped across your document, a “free trial” that quietly becomes a monthly subscription, an account demanded before you can download the thing you just made, an interface designed to make the upgrade button easier to find than the tool.

Someone compressing a photo for a job application at eleven at night does not need to be sold anything. They need the thing to work. Every tool here is free, unlimited, watermark-free, and requires no account — not as a promotion, but because processing on your device costs us nothing to give away.

Tools that ignore what people actually need

Real requirements are specific and unforgiving. A government portal wants a signature under 20 KB. A university form wants a photo under 50 KB at exact pixel dimensions. An application system rejects your file for having the extension .jpg instead of .jpeg — the same format, different three letters.

Most tools answer this with a quality slider and a shrug, leaving you to compress, check, adjust, and re-check until something passes. We built ours the other way around: you state the limit you have to meet, and the software works backwards until it gets there. That is the difference between a tool that technically compresses files and one that actually solves your problem.

Who this is for

Students assembling application documents. Job seekers whose CV attachment is three megabytes too large. Parents uploading school forms. Small business owners merging invoices. Anyone who has been told by a website, without explanation, that their file is invalid — and just needs it fixed, right now, without signing up for anything.

These are ordinary tasks, and they should take ten seconds and cost nothing. Often they are also private. All three of those things can be true at once, and this site is our argument that they should be.

How PDFBison stays free

We are honest about the business model, because a free tool with an unexplained business model is a reason to be suspicious.

This site is funded by advertising. That is the entire model. We do not sell subscriptions, we do not have a premium tier, and — this is the part that matters — we do not have your data to sell, because we never receive it. Your documents cannot be part of our business, since they never leave your device. Ads are served alongside the tools, never inside your workspace, and never in a way that interferes with the file you are working on. You can read exactly what advertising does and does not involve in our privacy policy.

Our promises

  • Your files stay yours. No uploads, no server copies, no exceptions. If this ever changes for any tool, that tool will say so plainly and loudly before you use it.
  • Free means free. No daily caps, no watermarks, no account walls, no feature held back for a paid tier that does not exist.
  • Honest results. When compression costs quality, we say so. When a target cannot be reached, we tell you instead of quietly returning something worse. When a limitation exists, it is documented rather than hidden.
  • No dark patterns. No fake progress bars to make the work look harder. No countdowns. No confusing buttons designed to catch a misclick.

Where we are going

We are building steadily: more PDF and image tools, better handling of the specific requirements people actually face, and clear written guides explaining why a portal rejected your file — not just how to fix it. Everything new will follow the same rule as everything already here. If a feature cannot be built without uploading your file, we will not build it.

Something broken, confusing, or missing? We would genuinely like to know — get in touch. Feedback from people using these tools for real tasks is how they get better.
